The Fluid Inclusion And Mineralogic Record Of The Transition From Liquid- To Vapor-Dominated Conditions In The Geysers Geothermal System, California

چکیده
Fluid-inclusion measurements and textural relationships demonstrate that coarse-grained quartz and calcite from the upper part of The Geysers thermal system formed during the transition from liquid-dominated conditions to the modern vapor-dominated regime. The most diagnostic characteristics of these transition assemblages are: 1) evidence of quartz dissolution; 2) contemporaneous trapping of high-and low-salinity waters representing liquids dominated by boiled reservoir fluid and condensate respectively; 3) the presence of solid inclusions in quartz of bladed, but commonly corroded, calcite; and 4) the common occurrence of multiple generations of primary, C02bearing vapor-rich inclusions. Corrosion of the quartz and calcite occurred as condensate, generated at the top of the developing heat pipe, percolated downward. These minerals were subsequently precipitated when the descending fluids boiled.

A Depletion Mechanism for the Behavior of Noncondensible Gases at The Geysers
Vapor-dominated geothermal systems, including The Geysers and Larderello, have experienced significant increases in noncondensible gas during their productive histories. A depletion model has been developed to explain these increases. In the model, the low permeability of the reservoir rock matrix initially retards the flow of vapor through the matrix to fractures due to the plugging effect of ...
متن کاملL Thermodynamic Classification of Geothermal Systems
A thermodynamic approach is presented to classify geothermal reservoir as vapor or liquid dominated. According to it, the vapor dominated reservoir has specific volume of fluid (i.e. combined vapor and liquid) greater than the critical volume of water whereas the liquid dominated reservoir has lesser specific volume. Enthalpy is not a conservative entity in a geothermal system. Apart from it, t...
متن کاملHeavy metal contamination from geothermal sources.
Liquid-dominated hydrothermal reservoirs, which contain saline fluids at high temperatures and pressures, have a significant potential for contamination of the environment by heavy metals. The design of the power conversion cycle in a liquid-dominated geothermal plant is a key factor in determining the impact of the installation. Reinjection of the fluid into the reservoir minimizes heavy metal...
متن کاملTHE eFFECTS OF ADSORPTION ON INJECTION INTO GEOTHERMAL RESERVOIRS
The effects of an adsorbing phase on the injection of liquid and eventual production of vapor from a lowporosity, vapor dominated geothermal reservoir was studied. The magnitude of delay caused by adsorption, diffusion partitioning, preferential partitioning, and permeability variation were compared. Results were then compared to measured tracer production data at the Geysers to determine the m...
متن کاملInvestigation of mineralogy and geothermometry of quartz and tourmaline veins at the Baghu area, southeast of Damghan
The Baghuo gold mine (Kuhzar) is located about 100 km S-SE of Damghan. The area is part of Torud- Chahshirin volcano- plutonic belt. The hosts of quartz – tourmaline veins are mainly granite, granodiorite and volcanic rocks such as andesite and dacite. Mineralization occurs as a copper- gold bearing silica vein. Quartz, pyrite, chalcopyrite, gold, hematite, malachite, azurite, covellite and Fe...
